Honiton acrobats double up on regional titles
Two acrobatic mixed pairs from Honiton have proved that they're head and shoulders above the rest after taking gold medals in the south west championships in successive levels.
Callum Abbott and Megan Quick took the top spot in the Grade 1 mixed pair competition, and Morgan Johnson and Megan Jones followed suit by taking the Prep B title. The two pairs continue Honiton Gym Club's winning streak, which has seen its gymnasts taking numerous medals throughout the competition season, including a further three medals at the south west novice championships.
Their coach Gemma Robertson, who runs the competition group at Honiton Gym Club, was particularly pleased with the results. She said: "It was a fitting end to the season for both pairs, and they are showing excellent promise for the future. Callum and Megan were sixth when they competed at the same level in March, so it shows how much they've improved over the past four months - their marks were nearly three full marks higher.
"I was so pleased with Morgan and Megan too. It was their first major competition, but they still competed with confidence and good presence on the floor. We certainly have stars of the future coming through the ranks."
More impressive performances came from Honiton gymnasts throughout the weekend too. Cerys Mack & Arabella Crandon-Griffiths took the silver medal in Prep A girls' pairs, Callum Abbott & Mathew Beviss took silver in Prep B boys' pairs, and Joelle Simpson, Amy Phillips & Michelle Quick took silver in novice level trios. All three partnerships were less than 0.3 of a mark behind the winners of their events.
Gemma added: "Although our beginner groups are predominantly about enjoyment, our results show that our younger gymnasts can have fun and learn impressive fundamental skills too. We'll look forward to watching their progression over the coming months and years."
In addition to the medal winners, Honiton Gym Club had more impressive results, with many other just missing out on the medals, some competing against as many as 40 other partnerships.
